Halloween in college sounds fun until you realize you need three different costumes, the party starts in two hours, and you absolutely do not have the budget for an outfit you’ll wear once.

Thankfully, some of the best college Halloween costumes can be created with clothes already sitting in your closet. You do not need a complicated DIY project or a suspiciously expensive costume made from approximately four inches of fabric. Start with an outfit you already own, add one recognizable detail, and suddenly it’s a costume.

Here are 15 easy last-minute Halloween costumes you can make without buying an entirely new outfit.

1. Men in Black

Wear black pants, a white button-down, a black blazer, and sunglasses. If you have a friend who can match, even better. This is one of the easiest duo costumes because it looks intentional while requiring almost no effort.

2. A Tourist

Pair shorts with a colorful button-down or vacation shirt, sneakers, sunglasses, and a tote bag or belt bag. Carry a map, camera, or water bottle and take pictures of everything all night for dramatic effect.

3. A Cowgirl

You probably already own most of this costume: jeans or a denim skirt, boots, and a tank top or plaid shirt. Add a bandana if you have one. A cowboy hat makes the costume more obvious, but you can easily borrow one from someone on campus.

4. A Frat Boy

Wear an oversized button-down or polo, backwards baseball cap, athletic shorts, tall socks, and sneakers. Carry an empty red cup and refer to everyone as “bro” until they ask you to stop.

5. A ’90s or Y2K Pop Star

Pull out low-rise or baggy jeans, a baby tee, tiny sunglasses, hoops, and a shoulder bag. Add plenty of lip gloss and butterfly clips if you have them. You can make the costume more specific by dressing as Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, or your favorite early-2000s celebrity.

6. A Pirate

Pair a flowy white blouse or button-down with black pants, a skirt, or shorts. Add boots, layered gold jewelry, and a scarf tied around your head or waist. Finish the look with dark eyeliner and carry a tote bag as your “stolen treasure.”

7. A Ballerina

Wear a bodysuit or fitted tank top with a skirt, tights, and ballet flats. Put your hair in a bun and tie a ribbon around it. If you own a wrap sweater, it makes the outfit even more convincing.

8. A Sleepover Girl

This may be the most comfortable college Halloween costume possible. Wear cute pajamas, slippers, a robe, and a sleep mask pushed onto your head. Carry a stuffed animal or pillow if you want to commit to the theme.

9. A Schoolgirl

Pair a pleated or plaid skirt with a white button-down, fitted sweater, or cardigan. Add knee-high socks, loafers or sneakers, and a headband or two braids.

10. A Tennis Player

Pair a tennis skirt with a polo shirt, tank top, or sweater. Add sneakers, tall socks, and a visor or baseball cap. Carry a racket if you have one, but the preppy athletic outfit can usually make the idea clear on its own.

11. A Boxer

Wear athletic shorts with a sports bra, tank top, or cropped T-shirt. Add sneakers, braids, and a robe or oversized satin shirt. Wrap your hands with athletic tape—or clean strips of fabric if you don’t have any—and add a fake bruise with eyeshadow.

12. A Vampire

Start with a black dress or an all-black outfit, then add boots, dramatic eye makeup, and dark red lipstick. Use red lipstick to draw two small bite marks on your neck. If you own anything velvet, lace, or deep red, this is its moment.

13. A Lifeguard

Wear red shorts with a white tank top, T-shirt, or bathing suit. Add sneakers, sunglasses, and a whistle if you have one. Pull your hair into a ponytail and carry a water bottle or pool float for an extra detail.

14. An Athlete

Wear your favorite jersey. Add eye black with eyeliner or carry a ball from whatever sport you are pretending to play. Bonus points if you sign autographs.

15. A Soccer Mom

Pair leggings with a quarter-zip, sweatshirt, or athletic jacket. Add sneakers, a baseball cap, sunglasses, and the largest tote bag you own. Carry snacks, tissues, water bottles, and a ridiculously detailed schedule—and spend the night reminding everyone that practice starts at 7:00 a.m. sharp.

How to Make a Closet Costume Look Intentional

The difference between “I’m wearing regular clothes” and “I’m wearing a Halloween costume” is usually one recognizable detail. Sunglasses transform black work clothes into a secret agent costume. A bandana turns jeans and boots into a cowgirl outfit. A sleep mask makes pajamas feel like a deliberate costume instead of an accidental nap.

Before buying anything, check with your roommates and friends. College closets are basically communal property during Halloween week, and someone probably has the hat, scarf, jersey, or accessory you need. You can also reuse pieces across multiple nights—because wearing three costumes should not mean buying three completely different outfits.

The Best Halloween Costume Is the One You’ll Actually Wear

Your college Halloween costume does not need to be expensive, uncomfortable, or incredibly original. It just needs to be recognizable enough that you don’t have to explain it every five minutes.

Look through your closet, choose one item that gives you an idea, and build the costume around it. Worst case, add sunglasses and confidently tell everyone you’re a celebrity in disguise. Confidence is at least 60% of any Halloween costume anyway.

XOXO,
