College Backpack Essentials: 20 Things I Actually Carry Every Day

By the time I graduated, I realized my backpack wasn't just for carrying my laptop. It had become my survival kit. Whether I was running from class to work, spending hours in the library, or meeting friends afterward, having the right things with me meant fewer stressful moments and fewer trips back to my apartment. These are the backpack essentials I actually used—not the random gadgets that looked cute online but never left the bottom of my bag.
1. My Laptop
This one's obvious, but it's the most important item in my backpack.
I used it for taking notes, working on group projects, writing papers, checking Canvas, and attending Zoom meetings. If your laptop battery isn't great, don't forget the charger too.
2. Laptop Charger
Nothing is worse than watching your battery hit 3% halfway through a lecture.
I learned pretty quickly that carrying my charger every day was worth the extra weight.
3. Reusable Water Bottle
Buying bottled water every day gets expensive. Keeping a reusable water bottle in my backpack saved money and reminded me to stay hydrated during long days on campus.
4. Portable Charger
This became one of my favorite purchases.
Between Google Maps, Spotify, texting friends, and scrolling between classes, my phone battery disappeared fast. A portable charger saved me more than once.
5. Headphones
Whether I was studying in the library or walking across campus, headphones were something I used every single day. Bonus points if they have noise cancellation.
6. Pens and Highlighters
You never know when someone will ask to borrow one. I always carried a few extra pens because somehow they disappear.
7. Notebook
Even if your classes are mostly digital, it's nice to have somewhere to quickly jot down ideas or reminders.
8. Snacks
This might be the most underrated item on the list. Protein bars, trail mix, pretzels, or granola bars kept me from buying overpriced snacks between classes.
9. Gum or Mints
After lunch, before presentations, or during long study sessions—always useful.
10. Hand Sanitizer
College campuses are full of shared desks, keyboards, and door handles. A small bottle barely takes up any space.
11. Lip Balm
Especially during the winter or in air-conditioned classrooms.
12. Hair Tie or Claw Clip
Even if I left my apartment with my hair down, there was a good chance it ended up in a ponytail by the afternoon. Keeping an extra hair tie in my backpack saved me constantly.
13. Mini Deodorant
Perfect for hot walks across campus, workouts, or busy days when you're gone from morning until night.
14. Stain Remover Pen
Coffee spills. Pasta sauce. Ink. Enough said.
15. Mini Umbrella
The weather has a funny way of changing right before your longest walk across campus. A compact umbrella takes up almost no room but comes in handy when you least expect it.
16. Tissues
For allergies, unexpected colds, or messy lunches. You'll probably end up helping someone else with these too.
17. Wallet
Mine usually had:
Student ID
Driver's license
Debit card
Credit card
A little cash
Keeping everything together made life much easier.
Bonus Items I Occasionally Carried
Depending on the day, I also packed:
A light sweatshirt for freezing classrooms
Sunglasses
Sunscreen
A book for downtime
Blue light glasses
A small pack of wipes
Sticky notes
What I Didn't Need Every Day
These items sounded like good ideas, but I rarely reached for them:
Three different notebooks for every class
Huge binders
Every textbook (only bring what you actually need)
Extra outfits
Bulky planners
Large makeup bags
The lighter my backpack, the happier my shoulders were.
Final Thoughts
You don't need the biggest backpack or every trending gadget to be prepared for college. Start with the basics, figure out what you actually use, and build your backpack around your routine. The best backpack isn't the one that's packed with the most stuff—it's the one that makes your day easier.
