What Do You Really Need for Your Dorm Bed? A Freshman's Guide to Dorm Bedding

If you've started shopping for dorm bedding, you've probably noticed that the internet wants you to believe your college bed needs approximately 47 different accessories.

Mattress topper. Mattress protector. Sheets. Comforter. Throw blanket. Decorative pillows. Bed rest pillow. Reading pillow. Blanket ladder. Somehow a headboard.

At some point, I started wondering whether I was moving into a dorm room or furnishing a luxury hotel.

So let's simplify things.

If you're asking what you actually need for your dorm bed, here's the advice I wish someone had given me before freshman year.

The Reality of Dorm Beds

Most dorm mattresses are not known for being luxurious. They're designed to be durable, easy to clean, and capable of surviving years of college students. Comfort is not necessarily their strongest feature.

That's why dorm bedding is one area where spending a little extra money can genuinely improve your college experience. After all, you're going to spend a lot of time in that bed. Not just sleeping. You'll also likely:

  • Study there

  • Watch movies there

  • Scroll TikTok there

  • Call your family there

  • Hang out with friends there

  • Accidentally take a "20-minute nap" that turns into three hours there

Your bed becomes one of the most-used spaces in your dorm room.

The Five Things I Think Most Students Need

Mattress Topper

If I could only recommend one dorm bedding upgrade, it would be a mattress topper.

A mattress topper adds an extra layer of cushioning that can make a standard dorm mattress significantly more comfortable. This is probably the dorm bedding item I hear students praise most often.

Mattress Protector

This isn't the most exciting purchase, but it's practical. A mattress protector helps keep your mattress cleaner and can protect against spills, sweat, and general wear throughout the year.

Sheets

This one sounds obvious, but make sure you're buying sheets that fit your dorm mattress size. Many colleges use Twin XL mattresses rather than standard Twin mattresses. Double-check before ordering.

Pillow

Bring a pillow you actually like. This sounds simple, but sleep quality matters, and a comfortable pillow can make a bigger difference than many students expect.

Comforter or Blanket

Whether you prefer a comforter, duvet, or blanket, you'll need something warm enough for sleeping throughout the school year. Dorm temperatures can be surprisingly unpredictable.

The Things That Are Nice to Have

Once you have the basics covered, there are a few extras that can make your dorm room more comfortable.

Throw Blanket

I used mine constantly. Not necessarily for sleeping, but for studying, watching movies, or staying warm when the room temperature suddenly felt like Antarctica.

Decorative Pillows

These can make your bed look nicer during move-in week. After that? Many end up on the floor. If you love the aesthetic, go for it. If you're trying to save money, you can absolutely skip them.

The Biggest Dorm Bedding Mistake

The biggest mistake I see students make is focusing on how their bed will look instead of how it will feel. Social media loves perfectly styled dorm rooms. Real college students love being comfortable. If your budget is limited, invest in the items that improve sleep quality first:

  • Mattress topper

  • Comfortable pillow

  • Good sheets

Nobody has ever regretted sleeping better during finals week.

My Final Recommendation

If you're building a college dorm packing list, focus on comfort over aesthetics.

For most students, the essentials are:

  • Mattress topper

  • Mattress protector

  • Twin XL sheets

  • Pillow

  • Comforter

Everything else is optional.

Can a throw blanket make your dorm room feel cozier? Absolutely.

Will decorative pillows make your room look cute? Probably.

But when you're exhausted after a long day of classes, what you'll really care about is whether your bed is comfortable enough to help you get a good night's sleep. And honestly, that's the dorm bed upgrade that matters most.

XOXO,

Broke College Girl
