What to Buy Before College vs. What Can Wait
Updated: Aug 23

One of the biggest mistakes I made before college was assuming I needed to have absolutely everything purchased before move-in day.
Every dorm packing list seemed to add another item to my shopping cart. Before I knew it, I was convinced that forgetting one random dorm essential would somehow ruin my entire freshman year.
Spoiler alert: it won't.
If you're preparing for college, here's something I wish someone had told me sooner: you do not need to buy everything before move-in. In fact, some dorm room essentials are worth purchasing early, while others are much better bought after you've actually seen your room and settled into college life.
Buy Before College
These are the items I would absolutely have ready before move-in day.
Bedding
Your bed is one of the first things you'll want to set up when you arrive.
I recommend purchasing:
Twin XL sheets (if required by your school)
Mattress topper
Mattress protector
Pillow
Comforter or blanket
After a long move-in day, you'll be glad your bed is ready to go.
Toiletries
Pack your everyday basics before arriving on campus.
Think:
Toothbrush
Toothpaste
Shampoo
Conditioner
Body wash
Deodorant
Hair products
Skincare products
These are things you'll need immediately.
Shower Supplies
If you're living in a dorm with communal bathrooms, you'll want:
Shower caddy
Shower shoes
Towel
These items are easy to forget but difficult to live without.
Technology
At minimum, I would have:
Laptop
Phone charger
Power strip
Portable charger (optional)
Technology is one category where waiting usually doesn't make much sense.
Basic School Supplies
You don't need an office supply store.
But I would bring:
A notebook
Pens
Highlighters
Laptop
You can always buy additional supplies later if classes require them.
Laundry Supplies
You'll likely need these during your first week.
I recommend:
Laundry hamper
Laundry detergent
Stain remover
Nothing says "welcome to college" quite like realizing you've run out of clean clothes.
Wait Until After Move-In
These are the items I would hold off on buying until you've seen your dorm room and established your routine.
Extra Storage Solutions
This is a big one.
Before college, I was convinced I needed:
Plastic drawers
Multiple organizers
Extra shelves
Storage bins
The problem?
I had no idea what my room looked like yet.
Many dorm rooms already include dressers, shelves, closets, and desk storage. Waiting a week or two can save both money and valuable space.
Mini Fridge
A mini fridge can be incredibly useful.
But before buying one, check:
Whether your school provides one
Whether your roommate already has one
Whether your dorm allows them
Many students end up with duplicate refrigerators because they purchased too early.
Decorations
I know decorating is fun.
But it's also one of the easiest categories to delay.
Wait until you've moved in and understand:
Your room's layout
Available wall space
Your roommate's setup
The overall vibe of the room
You'll make better decorating decisions later.
Additional School Supplies
Many students buy binders, folders, notebooks, and organizational systems before knowing what their professors require.
After classes begin, you'll have a much clearer idea of what you actually need.
Kitchen and Food Items
Many incoming freshmen imagine they'll stock their room like a grocery store.
In reality, meal plans often cover most daily needs.
Wait until you've established your eating habits before buying lots of snacks, containers, or food-related products.
The One Thing Nobody Tells You
There will be stores near campus.
There will be Amazon deliveries.
There will be Target runs with new friends.
You are not limited to whatever arrives in your dorm room on move-in day.
This realization takes a lot of pressure off the college shopping process.
My Rule for Dorm Shopping
Before buying something, ask yourself:
"Will I definitely use this during my first week?"
If the answer is yes, buy it before college.
If the answer is maybe, consider waiting.
This simple question can prevent a lot of unnecessary purchases.
My Final Take
If you're creating a college packing list, focus on essentials first:
Bedding
Toiletries
Shower supplies
Technology
Basic school supplies
Laundry supplies
Everything else can wait.
One of the biggest dorm move-in mistakes students make is trying to solve every possible problem before they arrive on campus.
The reality is that college is a learning process. You'll quickly discover what you need, what you don't need, and what purchases will actually make your life easier.
The goal isn't to arrive with everything.
The goal is to arrive with enough.

Broke College Girl
